In recent years, the Siksika Deerfoot Sportsplex has seen an increase in many hockey games that have been hosted at its facility. Although the Nation has many members who play for Siksika, there are also a lot who play for non-nation teams. The recent engagement with other teams requesting to use the Sportplex comes from the focus and support they want to show for Nation members who play at high levels of hockey outside of Siksika. Although the games that are hosted provide entertainment, it also shows the testament, growth and presence of Siksika’s Hockey players in provincial and national arenas.
Currently, Siksika is represented by several talented players across different age levels and teams. Players such as Kolt Calfrobe and Kenneth Erminskin (Breaker), who play for the U18AA Wheatland Chiefs, while Keaton Labelle competes with the Wheatland Raiders U16AA team. Additionally, young athletes like Kessel WhiteQuills/Medicineshield are competing at the U11AA level. These players, along with many others, have earned spots on elite teams, showcasing the bright future of hockey in Siksika. We also want to recognize recent minor hockey graduates like Ryder Many Grey Horses, Levitt Ayoungman, Kaiden Healy, Kage Wells, Trygve Many Guns (who is currently playing pro), and Anson McMaster (who won his league championships), who have paved the way for future talent. Furthermore, Emery Medicineshield, Emma LaBelle, and Pheonix Big Snake will be proudly representing Siksika with Team Alberta this May in Kamloops. Jaden Prairie Chicken is also making his mark, continuing the tradition of excellence and adding to the growing list of exceptional players from Siksika by playing U18 prep for hockey.
The Treaty Hockey Tournament is a significant event for Siksika, held annually. It offers an opportunity for both Nation members and those from outside the community to come together and compete while representing Siksika. Each year, it’s a source of pride for members who don’t live on the Nation, to play for Siksika and show their support.
As the community continues to support youth, the Deerfoot Sportsplex is enhancing its facilities. With future plans to upgrade the ice plant with the conclusion of the current season, the maintenance team is dedicated to ensuring that the quality of the ice is exceptional. As well, with teams throughout Alberta, such as the Calgary Hitmen of the Western Hockey League (WHL), and the Calgary Canucks of the Alberta Junior Hockey League (JHL), have praised the facilities when visiting or playing in Siksika. With the growing reputation, the Sportsplex is becoming a preferred venue for many, adding to the growing importance of the facility.
There is also a rise in the number of players that are registered with the Siksika Minor Hockey Association (SMHA). With huge support from the SMHA board, Siksika Health Services (SHS), and the Siksika Parks and Recreation team, making for a strong foundation of future growth.
As Siksika’s hockey continues to flourish, it is undoubtedly more than just a sport; it’s about community, culture, and the power of the sport, uniting and inspiring the next generation of Blackfoot athletes. In turn, Siksika is proving itself as a hub, a place where high-level athletes have started their journeys into the hockey world and inspire future generations to lace up their skates and do what others have before them. The growth of hockey in the community owes much to the Deerfoot Sportsplex and its dedicated staff, who have created an environment where young players can thrive. Additionally, the support from parents, who provide their children with opportunities to pursue their passion, plays a vital role in ensuring the continued success and development of the sport in Siksika.
