May has been observed as National Pet Month, and Nation members sent in photos of their pets to us, signaling just how strong our Nation’s ties to our animals are and how vital they are to our families.
We also decided to include the white buffalos Tomahawk and KellySpirit from The Barn, as well as cows, horses, a butterfly, a bumblebee, and birds from around the Nation. There was a particular hawk flying around BCHP as the sun was setting. Every animal in the Nation has a story to tell if you spend enough time to notice them or give them some kindness and empathy.
Our post-secondary summer student Lexx Manyheads and our Media Specialist Mase went to check on a dog that was picked up by Animal Services. The dog-mom had babies under the Elders Lodge deck, and residents and staff at the Elders Lodge were feeding her beforehand when she would come around. Then Animal Services picked her up after she had her babies.
It’s important to have empathy down to the gophers that dig annoying holes in our yards, the annoying flies that appear in our house, and down to the tiniest insects like bumblebees and butterflies. We hope this inspires people to feed any stray animal they see—it doesn’t matter who it belongs to or how anyone takes care of their pets. The main thing animals need is empathy, along with food and water.
Thank you! We hope you enjoyed seeing the animals and seeing your animals featured!
