Ida Duck Chief is a member of Siksika Nation who served in the Nation’s membership
department for more than forty-six and a half years. Her parents are Ferris and Daisy Smith, and
she is married to Herman Duck Chief. Together, they have two children, Armond Duck Chief
and Amanda Duck Chief. Throughout her time with Membership, Ida served in several roles,
including many years as the Membership Manager toward the end of her career.
Ida began her career with Membership on December 10, 1979, marking more than forty-six and
a half years of hard work and dedication to the Nation. Ida expressed that she loved working for
Siksika Nation. During her career, she worked under thirteen Chiefs and numerous Councilors,
but she always saw her work as serving the people.
“It was a really interesting job, but I worked for the people, and I love working for the people,
and working with my colleagues and the Band staff made the job more enjoyable.”
Ida Duck Chief on what it means to her to have worked for Siksika Membership for so many
years.
As her career came to a close, Ida said she was beginning to feel tired and knew it was time to
retire. One of her passions is sewing, and she plans to spend more time sewing during her
retirement.
On May 29, Siksika Membership hosted a retirement dinner in Ida’s honour at the Piiksapi
Memorial Arbour. Ida said she thoroughly enjoyed the evening and described it as emotional, but
very meaningful. She credited her staff for organizing such a special celebration. The retirement
dinner included speeches from colleagues, friends, and family members, along with a meal and
entertainment. Her son, Armond Duck Chief, and his band also performed during the event.
“Jobs on the Nation are for the people, and as long as you’re good to the people and you try your
best to help them, then you can be there forever!”
Words from Ida Duck Chief for anyone from the Nation who is working hard and hopes to make
a lasting impact in their career.
