Students at George Freeman School celebrated National Indigenous Peoples Day on June 19 with energetic and culturally led activities by Sayder Duck Chief, who introduced Blackfoot traditional games to Grades 1-5 students.
Duck Chief guided students through activities rooted in Blackfoot history, emphasizing skill, teamwork and cultural teachings. Games such as the horse relay racing, double ball, running scream and many more that give students a hands‑on opportunity to learn about Blackfoot ways of knowing while staying active and engaged.
George Freeman School teachers observed how quickly students connected with the activities, noting that many expressed excitements at trying new games played by Blackfoot ancestors. Duck Chief also shared stories about the significance of play in Blackfoot culture, highlighting how traditional games teach respect, rules, and community responsibility.
The event marked a meaningful celebration of Indigenous culture, offering students a deeper understanding of Blackfoot traditions through movement, learning, and fun.
