Straedan Running Rabbit wins Governor General’s Award

The Governor General’s Academic Medals were established in 1873 to recognize and encourage academic excellence across Canada. For nearly 150 years, these medals have remained among the country’s most prestigious academic honors. Awarded to students with the highest academic standing at the secondary, college, undergraduate, and graduate levels, they celebrate dedication, perseverance, and outstanding achievement. One recipient of this distinguished honor is Straedan Running Rabbit, whose passion for learning and commitment to helping others have shaped his academic journey.

When asked what motivated him to pursue the studies that led to receiving the Governor General’s Academic Medal, Straedan explained that his love of discovering and learning new things has always inspired him. He enjoys applying the knowledge he gains to help those around him, which naturally led him toward engineering. For Straedan, engineering provides the opportunity to solve problems and improve the lives of others through practical knowledge and innovation.

Receiving the award has had a significant impact on Straedan’s future. He shared that it has opened doors to scholarship opportunities, making it easier to continue his education by reducing financial pressures. Beyond the financial benefits, the medal serves as recognition of his academic abilities and gives him confidence that his hard work has been worthwhile.

Straedan stays motivated by focusing on his passion for learning and the opportunities his education will create. Even when faced with challenges or setbacks, he reminds himself of the positive impact he hopes to make in his future career. His determination comes from knowing that the knowledge and skills he develops today will allow him to contribute meaningfully to society tomorrow.

Although Straedan said he has not had a single mentor or role model who guided his success, he appreciates the encouragement and support he has received from people around him. He believes that his greatest source of motivation has always been his own curiosity and passion for learning, which continues to drive him toward his goals.

Looking ahead, Straedan plans to use the scholarships and opportunities that come with this achievement to continue his education in engineering. He also hopes his success will inspire other Indigenous youth to pursue higher education regardless of the challenges they may face. His story demonstrates that dedication, passion, and perseverance can open doors to incredible opportunities and encourage others to believe in their own potential.
