Over the summer, Siksika Nation provided students with an opportunity to experience what it is like to enter the workforce through its Summer Student program.
The program was a momentous success, with students from across the Nation gaining valuable hands-on experience while working in various departments. Through their placements, students had the opportunity to learn more about the important work each department does and gain a better understanding of how the Nation operates.
Siksika Nation Communications and Media had the pleasure of welcoming three summer students to the team. One of those students was Hadence Many Bears, who shared her experience and what she learned during her time with the department.
“This summer I had the opportunity to work at Siksika Media as a receptionist. Going into the job, I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I ended up learning so much and having a great experience.
One of the coolest parts was getting to learn new skills like photography and writing for the magazine. Working in a people focused environment also helps me become more confident with communication and stepping out of my comfort zone.”
It was a tremendous help to have the summer students lend an extra hand, and it was inspiring to watch them learn and develop new skills throughout their time with the department.
The Summer Student program provides an important and unique opportunity for the young people of Siksika to build their skills, gain valuable work experience, and discover new interests and abilities. It gives students the chance to explore different areas of work, find out what they enjoy and what they are good at, and potentially discover something they may want to pursue in the future.
“I also learned what it’s like to work in a professional environment, from staying organized and filling paper to understanding how a workplace runs behind the scenes.
I’m so grateful that Siksika Media gave me the opportunity to continue working for them. I’m also thankful to Siksika Employment and Training Services for providing the summer student program and helping me get this opportunity. This experience has helped me grow, gain confidence, and discover new skills that I’ll carry with me into the future.” Many Bears Continued.
Having summer students is not only a valuable opportunity for our young people to gain new skills and workplace experience, but it also provides much needed support to the departments they work with. Programs like this help create meaningful opportunities for youth while strengthening the work being done throughout the Nation.
We wish all the summer students the best of luck in their future endeavours and hope that the skills and experiences they gained this summer will continue to serve them wherever their paths may lead.
